Don't wait until school's out to start your job search! Below are ten tips WorkForce One offers teen job seekers to help improve your chances of finding and keeping employment.

  1. What do I want to do? Before you start your search, it’s important to figure out what kind of a job you would enjoy doing. Think about the activities you find appealing, then jot down a list of jobs in those fields. Be sure to list things you would like to do, as well as those that you have no prior experience in but would like to learn.

  2. What should I do next? – Now that you have a list of jobs you would like to do, it’s time to do some research. Go online and find out whether or not if companies in your area are hiring for that field. Come up with a plan of action, include:
    • When you will contact the companies
    • Where they are located
    • How you plan to contact them (in person, over the phone, through email, etc.)

  3. Where do I start?  – Internet job boards like www.snagajob.com and www.groovejob.com are excellent places to start your job hunt. These sites offer part-time, seasonal and in some cases, internship opportunities. Once you have an account, set up job match alerts. Job boards use alerts to match your skills to open positions and send messages, letting you know that they are available.
